It’s very practical,

you know,

this outer, inner, secret

Spiritual Practice,

Amid the cacophony of life,

Amid the hustle and bustle,

Amid a world embroiled

by nonsense,

here you are

empowered at least

at last,

gazing at mind, gazing at mind,

OM AH HUM, OM AH HUM,

Body, Speech and Mind,

confronting demons, obliterating obstacles,

finding peace, remaining at ease,

purifying your vision of the ineffable,

increasing your capacity,

living a good life;

Spiritual Practice

much more

than just

being one of the cool kids,

it’s about being weird,

being strange,

being unexpected,

doing what few have ever even considered,

not in an infinite series of lifetimes,

Aspiring to Awaken,

being diligent about it,

then

Awakening.

When we are Spiritual Practitioners, we Aspire to Awaken. This is not so easy. The world is full of people who run from one meditation retreat to another, meeting famous Spiritual Masters, receiving profound teachings and empowerments, bragging about this or that practice or how long they’ve been practicing; and, yet, they’ve not really Aspired to Awaken, nor do they hold that as a precious gem. This is really tragic. I hate to break it to them; however, without this most precious Aspiration they are no further along than a beginner who is merely contemplating the Spiritual Path. Because of this, they’ve set themselves up to fail, to abandon what is most precious. We must Aspire to Awaken, or there is no point whatsoever!

If you Aspire to Awaken, I mean truly Aspire to Awaken, then enlightenment is a certainty. It’s not so difficult, even though it may seem overwhelming. There are millions of Buddhist texts, all of them extremely profound and useful. We can add thousands of different practices to that, all of them profound and useful as well. In reality, there is only one point to discover, and you must do that in a way that is uniquely useful to you.

We start with this profound Aspiration to Awaken, dedicating our own Awakening for the benefit of all beings, then we gaze at mind. We look within. It’s best to keep it simple at first. We will need time for our capacity to increase, which means opening our heart and mind to the ineffable reality, which is Ultimate Reality, or as I’ve called it, Timeless Luminosity.

We don’t know what that is at first. We simply open our heart and mind to the possibilities, to reality itself. This very act is at the heart of Spiritual Practice. As our capacity increases, we can learn to bring benefit in other ways, by living virtuously, by living altruistically, by transforming, by remaining at ease in all situations. This is the synopsis of the Complete Path. You should know what you are in for before your first step, before you let go of cyclic existence and all that binds you. When you let go, you are ready to receive Ultimate Reality, you are ready to finally do something that will actually bring benefit to yourself and others for the first time in your infinite existence.

What few will tell you is that the Spiritual Path changes. Not only is it different for the 84,000 different types of students, it’s also completely different and unique to each Spiritual Practitioner. Since progress on the Path is typically very slow, teachers may forget to mention this one blaring reality about the Spiritual Path. It’s not pertinent to most students.

If, however, you are the sort of student who intuitively knows how to be efficient with your Spiritual Practice, it doesn’t take long to realize that the practices of mind change quite significantly. The first step is all about becoming happy and virtuous. With increasing capacity, it is about becoming altruistic, much like what we saw with Yeshua and Gandhi. If we are ready to really supercharge our Spiritual Practice, as we see with the Vajrayana, we transform everything through elaborate visualizations and rituals, working with energy in a very dynamic way.

When we at last realize the Nature of Mind, we discover that there is nothing to do. It is all self-perfecting. With this recognition we discover that which is unchanging, perfect from the beginning, Timeless Luminosity, beyond any mental fabrication. We discover what has always been there, though our own ignorance, attachments and hatreds have prevented us from realizing what is real. We’ve been frightened to let go for an eternity.

Spiritual Practice allows us to go beyond the constraints of mind. It allows us to surrender to the ineffable reality that awaits us all, without any sort of concern for a self that never really existed to begin with. In this, we begin to witness the illusion as it unfolds, without judgement, without pain.

If you’ve read The Frog: A Spiritual Autobiography, Spanning Many Lifetimes, you may have learned more than you really wanted to learn about the breadth and depth of Spiritual Practice; however, in reality, I barely scratched the surface of what that actually entailed. Spiritual Practice unlocks the hidden recesses of your mind. Truly powerful and useful Spiritual Practice confronts and conquers millions of demons. All obstacles become obliterated along this Path to Enlightenment. It’s very much worth all the effort.

Bringing blessings to everyone is at the heart of Spiritual Practice. You can step onto the Spiritual Path very easily. You only need to Aspire to Awaken. After that, do whatever you can to clear away the clutter that is preventing you from having a clear vision. I only ask people who consider me to be their teacher to promise to meditate at least twenty minutes each day. That is a very easy samaya to keep.

Guru Appears

Opening our mind,

Making our

The Guru Appears,

just like that,

without effort,

without the strain

of conflicting beliefs,

this natural wisdom appears

as blessings on the wind,

always there, always in motion,

flowing through us

from ineffable beginnings,

just waiting for us to become

ready,

compassionately tuned-in

with our own

Aspiration to Awaken,

lovingly helping us

in ways that no one has before,

The Guru Appears,

As no one has before,

helping us to unlock

our own unlimited potentiality,

as we are,

as it is,

as we become

ready to

Awaken.

People often ask me about how I could have learned so many mantras, various Spiritual Practices, how I might know what to do in various circumstances, how it is that I could have returned from death after going so far into the death bardo, that sort of thing. It’s really not a mystery. The thought that instantly comes to me when asked these types of questions is that the Guru appears at just the right time, appearing just when the need is great. It is also significant to mention that I remained focused upon Awakening throughout my lifetime, even as an infant. We must remain genuine and diligent, then the Guru appears at just the right time. I’m not entirely sure why that is. I suppose it has something to do with this notion of synchronicity.

When it is most important for us on our Spiritual Journey, the Guru appears. The Guru will not appear if you are distracted or not ready to receive profound teachings. If you truly Aspire to Awaken, the Guru will appear.

When I look back at my life, even though I was meditating since the time of my infancy, I had the attitude that I didn’t want the Guru to appear. This was due to a number of very traumatic experiences from my past lifetimes, which I describe in my book The Frog. It’s understandable that a person needs to take a pause from time to time, just be alone with your Spiritual Practice. Nothing happened with me until I let go, facing new traumas I surrendered to whatever may happen. Not having a clue about Buddhism in this life, I was about to meet a Tibetan Lama who would explain it to me. When this happened, a rush of familiarity, a sense that I had met lamas before, that I had even been a master from the past, all came to light in an instant.

After receiving my introduction to Buddhism, I returned home, only to encounter a blue wrathful Dakini, who did not introduce herself, by the way. I immediately knew what she was communicating telepathically; so, I reclined on my sofa and entered into a state of dream yoga, receiving vast teachings while in that open state of mind. This brought me back to the Spiritual Path. The Guru had appeared at precisely the most important moment, not before, not after it was too late, it was at the time that was most perfect.

So, when you decide once and for all that you must Awaken, beginning with an unbreakable Aspiration, you will be setting something in motion. Your obstacles will begin to clear at once.

You will meet your Guru precisely at the most perfect moment. This does not mean that you should make no effort to meet your Guru, it means that you should be ready, know how to follow your intuition, go where it is necessary for you to be. You will know if you pay attention carefully. This is not magical thinking, it’s something inexplicable that simply seems to work, due to the needs of your mind.

This also does not mean that you will meet a teacher who you must follow. It means that you will receive the wisdom teachings that you need in order to move forward. The decision to become the disciple of a particular teacher is a much more arduous task. The Guru, in this case, is someone who brings what you need to know, depending upon where you are on the Spiritual Path. You need to pay attention when this happens.

When I entered the death bardo the first time, becoming that amazing light of Dharmakaya instantly, going beyond this ignorant notion of self, I met the Ultimate Guru. I was ready for this. A lifetime of Spiritual Practice made me completely ready for death, completely at ease when that experience happened. Coming out of the Ultimate, back into this semblance of self, I knew very well that it was important for me to encourage people to Awaken, to enter the Spiritual Path in such a way that it actually brings benefit, rather than the myriads of other reasons people have for dabbling with spiritual issues and meditation.

Although we cannot Awaken without our own strong Aspiration to Awaken, which means developing a sort of supernatural level of determination and grit, we would have no hope of ever Awakening if it were not for the very necessary help of the Guru, who is really just a spiritual friend, someone with more experience who can help you with the Spiritual Path.

that’s all it takes;

When we realize

the Nature of Mind,

we enter awareness,

we remain, we persist

in meditation no matter what;

We are no longer

distracted by our

outwardly projecting mind,

no longer distracted by these

beliefs, concepts, thoughts,

no longer distracted by our own

not knowing, grasping, distaste,

no longer distracted by

ego pounding distractions

into what it is not real,

this dark delusional box;

One point is discovered,

all becomes liberated

in every moment;

One point is realized,

now the challenge becomes

infinitely greater;

One point, one point,

Our Primordial Condition is

recognized;

Rigpa, nondual awareness,

Instant presence remaining

from one moment

to the next, without limits,

being present, relaxing completely,

this direct experience is achieved,

all habits of delusion fall away;

With this one point,

we become accustomed to

Enlightenment itself,

remaining present

in that infinite awareness

beyond all obstacles,

no longer constrained

by relative reality,

Awakening to Ultimate Reality,

remaining aware

in this present infinite

inexplicable moment,

24/7.

If you are just beginning with meditation and are considering this idea of stepping onto the Spiritual Path by Aspiring to Awaken, you can begin with the attitude of bringing everything into your meditation. You can do so with the attitude of making this into a 24/7 practice. You do not need to wait to become an advanced Spiritual Practitioner. By looking inwardly at mind, you tap into an extraordinary power. You discover that you can remain at ease. You discover a place that does not need to be consumed by agitation and distraction. This simple discovery can give you all that you need to step onto the Spiritual Path. You’ve discovered a spark of what is possible.

Of course, when we begin, we do not yet have the ability to remain without distraction; so, our attitude of remaining in awareness is nothing other than an ideal at that point. As we advance, we develop our abilities, sometimes very slowly, sometimes by leaps and bounds. Meditation is your inward journey. Your success depends entirely upon you. There is absolutely no way that someone else can increase your capacity or tell you what enlightenment actually is.

When you Aspire to Awaken, your success is guaranteed; and, it soon becomes obvious that this success will proceed quickly if you apply yourself in every moment of the day and night. A few minutes or hours every day will simply not be enough. You must begin with this 24/7 attitude, increasing this determination as you advance.

When we realize the Nature of Mind, we come to a place in our Spiritual Practice where we can realistically remain in awareness 24/7. Meditation is usually considered to be something conceptual, applying mantras, focusing on breath, trying to achieve enlightenment, or simply sitting comfortably on a cushion staring at a wall, that sort of thing. Meditation is typically devoted to applying mind, looking at mind, working with mind. This takes considerable effort.

When we recognize the Nature of Mind, however, something quite amazing happens—it becomes effortless. We find ourselves being able to relax completely in all circumstances, remaining in awareness, becoming instantly present. We simply remain in this direct experience, this realization.

It is not really something that can be explained conceptually, what this realization actually entails. When it happens to you, it will undoubtedly be the most startling amazing experience imaginable. When it happened to me, my teacher described it as an earthquake. From my perspective, all of existence was shaking, coming and going, phasing in and out. Now I remain in that awareness no matter what happens, in all circumstances.

The term Rigdzin means Awareness Holder. When we are able to remain instantly present in all circumstances, we hold our awareness of the Nature of Mind clearly, unshakable, without trying to do anything with our mind. We observe all appearances as our natural condition, coming from the primordial state beyond all fabrication, which is instantly self-liberated, perfect from the beginning. When you begin, do so with the attitude of a Rigdzin. This is not something unattainable for you, it is in that spark when you Aspire to Awaken.

Within this spark, we have all the reasons in the world to keep our own Spiritual Path in mind at all times. We have all that we need. When you realize this for yourself, without taking anyone’s word for anything, you will be able to increase your capacity, along with your confidence.

It is, perhaps, essential to point out that we already possess all the potentiality of a fully enlightened Buddha. This is for you to discover. When we first look within, we catch a glimpse of that. When we pay attention, when we notice our mind perceiving that spark, we have all that we need to remain diligent, to discover unlimited potentiality within ourselves.

If you are walking around with something extremely valuable, maybe a great jewel of some sort, you pay attention to that. You don’t become careless about it. By keeping this Aspiration to Awaken in mind at all times, daily life, dreams and death become opportunities to Awaken. This most precious jewel, that we do not yet understand, becomes our 24/7 impetus for Awakening.

Agitation

Agitation of mind,

not knowing, not knowing,

not knowing why these waves,

these unpleasant thoughts,

this unwelcome disquiet,

these emotions bombard us,

our every moment

agitated,

taking away this calm, that

peace we had so enjoyed,

we become distracted

by emotions,

by appearances,

by thought after thought,

after thought,

by that which is not real;

Remaining at ease

when death approaches,

this is most crucial,

so why have we not prepared,

why have we not increased virtue,

why have we ignored

this great transmigration into a new lifetime?

Our deluded mind,

clinging to thoughts,

to emotions,

to figments of our imagination,

allowing this inexplicable

agitation to remain, to increase,

powerless to do anything about it,

why have we given that so much

importance?

Remain at ease!

Remain at ease, you fool!

Know how to remain at ease!

Death is upon us!

Know how to navigate

this great gap, this death bardo,

this inexplicable existence!

Empower yourself,

Empower your mind

to remove the great demon of agitation!

Know that this mastery

over any agitation

is obtainable;

Create the conditions

for agitation to instantly dwindle;

Gaining power over death

requires us

to disperse all agitation

into emptiness, instantly,

instantly,

as we remain completely at ease

no matter what comes our way,

as it is.

When death approaches, we might find ourselves agitated and angry for no apparent reason. Our mind becomes entangled inexplicably with energetic forces, as our physical body decreases. Finding it impossible to sleep or to feel at ease, our agitation compounds. For those who are unprepared for death, it may be too late to do anything about it. The karmic winds are about to send you into another inexplicable lifetime, something entirely out of your control.

So, I propose to you, might it be the right time to start gaining some mastery over your mind? If we postpone meditation until we are sick and dying, we won’t have the slightest ability that is necessary for a beneficial transmigration. I’ve seen this with my own eyes—and it is heartbreaking. It is too late if we are already on the way, at that time when the signs of death are becoming more and more obvious.

It seems to me that learning how to remain at ease when we become agitated might be one of the most useful skills that we can learn. Such a skill requires much more than simply reading books or seeking out advice from great masters. It requires us to meditate every chance we get, even in dreams. Without a strong unbreakable Aspiration to Awaken, it is unlikely that we will develop a sufficient amount of practice time for this one simple easy to learn skill.

Sometimes people laugh at those who spend a lot of time practicing peaceful abiding meditation, or Shamatha, saying that it is just for beginners. They then opt for very advanced Spiritual Practices that they are not ready to do. This is a tragic mistake, because remaining at ease is necessary for all Spiritual Practices, or they simply won’t be effective. Taking the time to master Shamatha will help you to construct a strong foundation that is essential for the time when you die.

As you may recall when I explained my death experience, I instantly became Source, then remained at ease for a hundred years while pulling strands of my old long-forgotten life back together, while I chanted mantras and engaged in many other Spiritual Practices. This could not have been possible if I had been cavalier about my overall knowledge, understanding and implementation of that. Genuinely practicing over many lifetimes, along with rediscovering my Spiritual Practices, made it very likely that I would have the most extraordinary death experience possible. This should not be a surprise to hear about that. With Spiritual Practice comes empowerment, an almost supernatural ability to deal with every single situation that comes our way.

The key point is that we can do anything possible, if we have a strong foundation of remaining at ease. If we are constantly prone to agitation, we lose our power, we lose the ability to navigate from one moment to the next. Agitation takes away our power. Agitation means that we are allowing our karmic winds to propel us into unacceptable nightmares of our own creation.

When we accumulate virtue, we have created an important attribute that will allow us to remain at ease. We create a situation where we can tell ourselves that we are worthy of Awakening. The agitation diminishes within this knowledge.

When we accumulate a lifetime of unwholesome activities and battles, we diminish our own sense of being worthy, the agitation only increases. Agitation springs from disturbing emotions, from anger, fear and hate. If we are embroiled in the world, we are cultivating these emotions, which means we are increasing our agitation. This takes away our inherent power. Agitation creates causes and conditions for our continued demise.

In these next few moments, make the commitment to removing agitation from your life, to remaining at ease in all circumstances. If you combine this with the Aspiration to Awaken, you will have the spiritual foundation necessary to get you through all that life and death throw your way.

Mental Body

Death!

Here we are in death,

transmigrating

with this mental body,

This mental body, mental body,

mental body…

this body is not real!

Dreams!

Here again in dreams,

transmigrating

with this mental body,

This mental body, mental body,

mental body…

this body is not real!

Daily life!

Here we are in our daily life,

transmigrating

with this physical body,

This physical body, physical body,

physical body…

this is just

another mental body!

This physical body

is an illusion,

this body is not real!

A few people have gotten rather confused when I explained my journey back from death, chanting mantras, forming countless mudras for over a hundred years in order to appear back in this physical body. They didn’t understand how I could have done this if my body was back in a hospital receiving treatment for a heart condition. How could I chant or form mudras without a physical body? It didn’t make any sense.

When we think about our lives, we usually think that every single thing about it is somehow real. Our physical body seems real. Our thoughts seem real. Our perception of the world around us seems real. What we don’t realize is that none of that can be located. No two people can actually view anything the same way. Likewise, no two moments in our own lives can be regarded as the same reality. It’s all in constant flux, constantly changing, completely unlocatable.

The body we experience in our dreams is the same way. Nobody questions that our body while we are dreaming is unreal, except when we are in the middle of that dream. During the dream, our body feels every bit as real as our body feels when we are experiencing our daily lives, even if we dream that we are a different person, or even if we dream that we are a different type of being. It seems real, even though it is changing and unlocatable, and in constant flux.

When we die, we experience something that seems far more real than either our daily lives or our dreams. This is because the experience is more open. We are raw, exposed to the elements. Energy flows through us and we are aware of this energy. This is the condition of the mental body in the death bardo. Even though we may be aware that our mental body is not solid, flowing with the currents of eternal karmic winds, it seems very real. The reality that we experience in the death bardo is far greater than anything we are accustomed to feeling while in a physical body.

Understand this: We are always in a mental body. Without our mind fabricating every aspect of this body, our physical body could not even exist. We cling to life, thinking that it is real, so that we can continue to fabricate our own existence. Our physical body is a mental body.

Now, so that you don’t misunderstand what I just said, you must treat this mental body with extreme care, or your obstacles will only increase. We must treat our physical body with extreme care, or you will be unable to awaken. Just because your mental body is not real does not mean that you should be careless about it. In order to go beyond the confines of this cyclic existence, you must create causes and conditions for your own Awakening. If this does not happen, you will only make your situation much worse!

We are fortunate when we have the opportunity to Awaken. If we are careless with this life, then we will only find our own misery magnified. We will continue to wander. By seeing the world around us, as it is, we unlock great love and compassion. We begin to see the hold that this terrible illusion has had on us. We begin to loosen the chains that have bound us for an eternity.

I think that the reason there are so many secret teachings in Tibetan Buddhism is because people are prone to taking this knowledge and then doing something very foolish with that. It takes time to develop a way of seeing things that does not become sort of a tragic blunder. When we are in a dream, it is a mistake to simply jump off a cliff once we realize the dream is unreal. If we do something like that, we still experience the tragedy that is inherent in the dream. This can cause us lasting trauma. Likewise, when we live our lives, doing anything to harm our physical body can cause terrible lasting trauma; and, it will most certainly become a most terrible obstruction for us.

Our mental body is simply our point of view in a field of relative points of view. It is not to be separated from dreams or daily life, because it is all the same. When we die, we transmigrate with a much more pure form of our mental body, something that becomes abundantly clear to us in its connection to everything everywhere, in all times, without restrictions of any kind. We encounter our eternal Oneness. This experience goes far beyond daily life or dreams. We must remain within this awareness, then Awaken.

Natural Condition

That is our Natural Condition,

vast,

aware,

inclusive of everything

It is not,

Not this closed-minded buffoon,

who thinks that thoughts are somehow real,

who thinks that belief is somehow valuable,

who thinks this world isn’t illusion,

who thinks that there is an answer

out there to obtain;

Our Natural Condition

is one of spaciousness,

of light,

of blazing brightness,

a vision that

that cannot be grasped

by deluded mind,

that cannot be conceived,

not by all the great philosophers,

not encapsulated

by any or all religions

nor beliefs;

To discover our Natural Condition,

Gaze at mind!

Look within!

Experience the ineffable directly!

Discover your true unlimited potentiality!

Sometimes people think that discovering our Natural Condition is far away, that it is elusive, that only very advanced Spiritual Practitioners from Tibetan monasteries are able to discover such a thing as that. What people don’t realize, when they are dependent upon their own preconceptions, is the obvious, that we are all perfect from the beginning, that we don’t need to belong to some sort of sect in order to become realized masters, that our Natural Condition is always just here, as obvious as can be. We don’t need to be the sort of person who fits into any sort of preconception, we only need to remain at ease, then allow ourselves to be present in that realization of who we have always been.

When we create artificial preconceptions, then follow that up with beliefs which have no basis in reality, we trap ourselves. Cyclic existence only occurs because we are only too eager to fantasize about everything. We place importance upon teachers who look a certain way, but have no realizations worth mentioning. We jump from one belief to another, even though we can examine those beliefs as being completely arbitrary assumptions, based only in fantasy and wishful thinking. We’re a real mess and we don’t have to be this way.

If we wish to be genuine, then we need to start cleaning up our mess and get real. In order to do that, we need to look within, while Aspiring to Awaken, which means finding a way to truly understand reality, seeing just what is going on here without obstructions distracting us at every turn. When we clean up our mess, our vision clears. We start to have some idea that this Natural Condition is, in reality, full enlightenment. We start to Awaken.

We don’t need to accumulate a zillion empowerments from Tibetan Lamas, accumulating Spiritual Practices that we rarely ever do. We don’t need to meet famous Buddhist teachers. We don’t need to belong to this or that religion or sect. What we need to do is to get real, utilizing whatever means possible to discover Ultimate Reality for ourselves. In my mind, this means that we need to know where we are and where we are going. We need to know the point of meditation, as well as Spiritual Practice in general.

It seems logical to me that I point out that we are not even on the Spiritual Path, if we do not Aspire to Awaken. It seems logical that I point out that the first step, which is Aspiring to Awaken, ignites a spark within us. It seems logical to me that I point out that this spark is the same as full Enlightenment. It seems logical to me that I point out that your job as a Spiritual Practitioner is to clear away the clutter, all these things which are preventing you from truly understanding just what that spark is all about. This means increasing your own capacity through an ongoing Spiritual Practice, taking advantage of each and every moment in your rather limited human lifetime, both during the day and at night while you dream. This is a big task, and you are completely capable of mastering this task.

Our Natural Condition is here, now. You have only this simple task of paying attention, then cleaning up your mess. These many obstructions are not something to fear. They’re more irritating than anything, once you have determined what they really are.

Your life as a Spiritual Practitioner is one that makes no sense to those who are deluded. Don’t look for approval from any of them. They won’t really notice when you become enlightened, and you shouldn’t care about that. This world rewards those who perpetuate this world. It rewards those who are delusional and distracted, creating turmoil, rather than peace. Don’t look outside yourself for answers or rewards. This is an inner journey, one you must take all by yourself. Even great Spiritual Masters will tell you to investigate mind for yourself, not to rely upon their word for anything at all. Teachers are there only for a word of advice now and again. You must investigate mind. You must clean up your own mess.

When we discover our Natural Condition, that is the beginning of a much vaster endeavor. You begin to practice with Awakening itself. As difficult as it is to reach that point, it is well worth it. You will certainly Awaken.

See this confusion!

Mind, mind, mind!

Look with Awareness!

See this confusion,

See belief in crisis,

See your own Awareness,

See this confusion

as a blessing!

Look, see directly!

Look into the eyes of all that discord!

Relax!

Remain at ease,

in that swirling

turbulence caused

by your own not knowing!

Remain at ease!

Your confusion,

your own eternal grasping

at what is not real,

perpetuated by clinging

to a myriad of thoughts,

these contrary notions,

Unreal!

All these philosophical beliefs,

Unreal!

All these random assumptions,

assumptions based in pure fantasy!

Thoughts are not real!

Beliefs are not real!

Assumptions are not real!

Only through direct experience,

directly engaging

with the inexplicable,

beyond all these

swirling thoughts,

only then will you ever,

ever, ever know reality!

Awaken!

Awaken at once!

Remain at ease

in that natural condition,

Simplify all,

as all these fantasies swirl about

in the turbulence of mind,

without substance,

without validity,

without any thing that we can ever call real,

Timeless Luminosity,

Right here now!

Without elaboration,

without elaboration,

Remain at ease!

Look at mind!

Confusion is not something we should ever consider to be a problem, simply because confusion contains something very important for us to understand. Within the state of confusion resides the basis for enlightenment itself. If we are confused, we can look directly at the jumble of random thoughts, our own attempts to cling to beliefs, this comical effort to make some sense about a world that can never truly make any sense.

When people discover the Nature of Mind, one of the first things that they notice about the world is that everyone is insane, constantly grasping at what is not real, creating their own demise with their own confusion, without realizing how or why they are doing that. To make it worse, it becomes evident that only a few rare individuals will ever make any attempt to get past this insanity that is caused by their own confusion. The insane perpetuate this condition of confusion by trying to make it real, defending erroneous contentions, then spreading this confused way of looking at the world with everyone they encounter. It is really both a tragedy and a comedy.

When we Aspire to Awaken, we are aspiring to go beyond all confusion. We are aspiring to go beyond belief, as well as far beyond what is not real. Although we use this notion of going beyond, it is really not anywhere else than right here, right now. The only reason that we utilize this concept of going beyond is because we must let go of all this confusion that has us trapped. Ultimate Reality is not something that we can grasp, not something that can be encapsulated by any belief or concept. Confusion happens when we cling. If this is so, then we must be ready to let go.

It’s not such a bad thing to realize our own confusion, even though people will lament having any confusion. It is the problematic way that we grasp at what is not real. When we are confused, we’re actually witnessing our own awareness observing the situation realistically. When we feel more comfortable, less confused, we are really only creating a little nest for ourselves where we may be perpetuating our place in cyclic existence. We need to leave that place where we feel safe, that egotistical nest, getting out of our comfort zone, or we will never Awaken.

If you are a Spiritual Practitioner, which is someone who has Aspired to Awaken, then you utilize anything that you can to Awaken. You don’t need to go here or there, you don’t need to join any religion or subscribe to some philosophy, you only need to approach what appears with an open mind. You need to look within, rather than finding external sources of confusion. You should never take anyone’s word for anything; rather, you must consider for yourself. This requires lots of time meditating, which initially means looking at your own mind, observing thoughts and confusion, seeing for yourself just what is going on here.

It doesn’t matter where you are or what your circumstances may be, looking within will empower you, rather than creating more confusion. Even if a teaching seems confusing, if you remain at ease, looking within, the confusion rather quickly begins to clear. This is how the Spiritual Path works, it is the process of Awakening happening in real time.

When you see how meditation removes confusion, it is tempting to start utilizing that to improve your standing in the world, your career, how you navigate for personal gain. It is important to not cling to this sort of thing. Even though it has been proven that meditation improves brain function rather significantly, that is not the point of meditation.

When we meditate, doing so without a strong Aspiration to Awaken is pointless. Without having the proper motivation, we will quickly fall back into eternal confusion. Our intention must be held as most precious or our suffering and confusion will most certainly continue forever. This is something that great masters will tell you; although, it also becomes apparent with Spiritual Practice.

Imagine you are an eagle

Waking up in a dream,

you, this eagle,

having no idea,

no idea

that you once

held great knowledge,

that you once were

human in a bigger dream,

having no idea, not a clue

that you are an eagle,

waking up in this crazy

confused dream

as an eagle, not knowing

not knowing what eagles do,

Trapped, trapped I tell you!

There you sit

among the reeds and willows,

stranded without hope

on a small island,

not understanding,

not knowing what any of that is,

not understanding,

not knowing where you are,

not understanding,

not knowing

your true potentiality,

having no clue

about what you can do;

There you are,

this magnificent eagle,

stumbling around

sloshing in the water

tripping over yourself

in this tangled mess;

Do you want to know every detail,

Everything there is to know

About each blade of grass,

About the sky and wind,

And mosquitoes,

About the distance

to the far shore,

About every aspect

of your body, not being able

to swim or walk, or build a boat,

All these things, every detail,

Panic sets in, trapped!

Before you even move a muscle,

Before you devise a plan,

Before you even muster courage?

Do you really need to know

each detail, every subtlety

with this situation?

Clinging to the minutia,

infinite depths of microscopic topics,

Every single nuance,

All about this tangled mess,

And the way to escape,

Everything to know ad nauseum?

Or do you want to see this big picture,

that View from the sky?

Sometimes the way I teach causes confusion. I start with the big picture, relating the first step with the final result. I point out the similarity with having a strong Aspiration to Awaken with full Enlightenment itself. In order to benefit from my teachings, it is important to relax. It’s possible for you to see the similarity between a lit candle and the blazing sun. You don’t need to know every single detail in order to see that bright light has the same characteristics as even brighter light. You can relax in the knowledge that they are the same on some level.

Teaching is not something that I really ever wanted to do. It only became apparent that it was essential for me to teach while I was returning from the death bardo. Up until that point, I was quite content to do what I could without any sort of title or designation.

While people often look to teachers who are qualified, they also have difficulty realizing just what sort of qualifications are useful, relying instead on institutions for such designations. Real qualifications have to do with realizations. If you wish to understand emptiness, you need a teacher who has realized emptiness. If you wish to realize the Nature of Mind, you need a teacher who has attained great confidence in this realization. This has nothing to do with institutional authority. As a Spiritual Practitioner, we need to encounter Spiritual Friends who have genuine realizations. Those are the qualifications that matter. It has nothing to do with how many followers a teacher might have or which institutions have given them authority.

When we step onto the Spiritual Path, we Aspire to Awaken. With this Aspiration comes teachings that will help. If you come to me, I will show you the complete Spiritual Path, then ask you to deal with the details on your own. When I show someone the Spiritual Path, I am showing you your own infinite potentiality. It’s a big wide view of the inexplicable, starting with your own confusion.

When I tell you that the first spark is the same as full Enlightenment, I am telling you something about your own potentiality. I am telling you that you have the capacity to wake up, to become fully Enlightened. This is actually very simple to understand, if you hold that spark as something very precious. You don’t need to think about the details, you only need to plunge into Spiritual Practice, taking every available moment as an opportunity to Awaken.

We should not be timid about the Spiritual Path, simply because there is no time to waste. We must begin at once. We must take every opportunity to Awaken before it is too late. As humans, we are prone to procrastination, as well as underestimating our true potentiality. We waste time waiting for permission. We waste time thinking we need more information. We waste time thinking that we’re not good enough for this amazing journey.

In reality, the best thing to do is to simply take the leap. See what happens. When we don’t understand something, look at it. When we realize something, allow our capacity to increase.

When I was in the death bardo, I knew that I must return to teach, if only just a few people. I don’t rely upon texts, I rely upon my own realizations. I don’t seek approval from institutions, I commune with Buddhas as part of my realizations and ongoing Spiritual Practice. If you are seeking teachings from me, I want you to supplement whatever I tell you with teachings from other sources. You need to fly.

Preparing for death, learning about our real condition, will help us to Awaken, there is no doubt about that. It will also help others to Awaken. Today I talked about someone close to me who recently passed away. This should give you another clue as to why I returned to Earth, even though I could have easily stayed in that bright condition for an eternity. It has to do with helping at least one other person to Awaken. This is doing what we can, this is what Spiritual Practice looks like when we pragmatically put it into action.

Realizations

Realizations await!

Oh, Spiritual Practitioner!

See your Path to Liberation!

All this eternal

nonsense and clutter,

clinging to darkness,

clinging to suffering,

clinging to belief,

clinging to what is not real,

Stop doing that!

Letting go of this

useless self, this

closed heart and mind,

It’s time to discover reality!

Aspire to Awaken,

Aspire to realize,

Realize fully

All that is beyond our

Senseless existence, our

Senseless eternal suffering;

It’s very simple!

Enlightenment,

nothing to it,

easy-peasy,

Awakening is just so,

just here in this moment,

just as simple as can be!

You can’t do that?

You can’t Awaken?

You don’t know why yet?

Okay, no problem,

Just look at this world around you,

Just keep this cycle of misery going,

See how well it has never served you in the least!

If your attachments and misery

are important to you,

then cultivate delusion, cultivate desire, cultivate hate;

Don’t forget fear and greed and anger!

There you go,

he says with as much sarcasm as possible,

your demise is ensured,

you can keep flailing in the bardos,

you may never Awaken,

and, since this was your choice to keep it going,

you will have nothing to complain about!

See this world for what it is!

Realize the futility of perpetual suffering!

Realize this, you must Awaken!

When we talk about realizations in relation to the Spiritual Path, we are really talking about milestones in how we see reality, which means seeing more clearly, catching glimpses of Ultimate Reality. When we step onto the Spiritual Path, we only see a spark at first, maybe just a small flash of light that we somehow sense is truth. We can call that a spark of truth; however, with each realization, we discover that truth is really something far more simple and far vaster than we had ever imagined possible. We realize we’re trapped by delusion.

Here we are as ordinary humans, clinging for the most part to those things we were born into, our national identity, religion, politics, family, socioeconomic status, culture, ethnicity—all the things that somehow give us identity and a sense of self. This was never our choice, except that we created causes and condition in lifetime after lifetime that made it all possible. We might, despite objection from those in our lives, start to question that. When we start to look at all that nonsense we were born into, we start to see that it is a very small dark corner of what we assume is reality, assuming without any real knowledge. It’s just a relative point of view that cannot actually withstand the questions necessary. It’s actually rather easy to see that absolutely every concept and belief we’ve ever had are completely erroneous.

When we examine the boundary between self and other, we can’t find a boundary. We share air. We share water. We share ideas and language, and being human.

We can examine our boundaries between humans and all other beings, as well, finding similar results. We can see that we all require each other or we wouldn’t exist at all. We easily discover this boundary does not exist. We discover Oneness at some point.

In this swirling turbulent mess we call the life bardo, we need only realize that appearances are teachings, resting in that observation, and it becomes obvious that cyclic existence is futile. We can see that we create our own demise. It becomes obvious that none of it is necessary.

At that point, we have the realization that we must let go. We might spend a little bit more time and energy seeking or dabbling among various philosophies, spiritual points of view, ideas about reality; however, we develop a sense that our own clinging and attachments are holding us back. This leads to the realization that we must Awaken. When that happens, we’re ready for the first step. This is a major realization.

So, we begin to look at mind. We begin to develop a repertoire of Spiritual Practices that might lead to awakening. Most of all, we realize that we must Aspire to Awaken and never give up. We hold this realization as most precious; it dominates each and everything we do from that point forward.

Realizations vary from one individual to another. It depends upon what we don’t know. We might not understand at first, for instance, that love and compassion are vitally important. When we see that this spark embodies love and compassion, that we must cultivate that with each action, we discover an essential realization. Sometimes people miss this important teaching, thinking that it’s more important to keep battling the world around them. This sends people off the Path, back to a place that is much worse than when they first started.

Another important realization is when we discover Emptiness. Everything looks magical, truly crisp and clear with this realization. With Emptiness we discover the illusory nature of existence. It’s important.

When we realize the Nature of Mind, it will shake your world, because we have finally recognized the basis for enlightenment itself. Related to this, we have many stages of realization, which are levels of spiritual progression. The point is to Awaken. When that happens, we have everything.

When we start to meditate on impermanence, we start to realize how vitally important it is to prepare for death. In preparation for death, we need to look within, learning to open our heart and mind, we need to practice love and compassion. We also need to avoid clinging to those things that are preventing us from awakening, such as ignorance and any disturbing emotions. Looking outside of ourselves is not conducive to awakening. It’s important to take care of ourselves by discovering our true potentiality within.

Death is just another passage into another impermanent condition, that is unless we awaken. In order to awaken, we need to discover reality, we need to remove all obstacles that are preventing us from truly understanding and becoming Ultimate Reality. If you look at mind, genuinely spending time getting to know who you really are, in time you will awaken. This needs to be a serious effort, and we must never give up, or there is simply no way to remove yourself from cyclic existence.

Presence

Present in Awareness,

in this moment,

in all that appears,

Instantly Present,

Awakening is at hand!

Here we are,

no longer distracted,

by this great illusion,

no longer thinking about past,

which is gone completely,

no longer obsessed with future,

which cannot happen,

no longer deluded

by those things not real,

in this present moment;

We are present!

We have found awareness!

It is time to Awaken!

If we are to Awaken, we must remain present, we must pay attention to what is happening now, we must pay attention to mind. If we keep looking outside of ourselves, remaining distracted by all the obscurations and embroilment of the world, then we will simply remain in cyclic existence, maybe forever. This world is not real. This great dream we call daily life is just a figment of our imagination, something that can never be real. Unless we are present, we can’t even begin to fathom the nature of the world around us. It will continue to bind us, and we will continue to suffer.

Being present is not the same as being mindful; although, that is closely related to what being present means. Being present, in the sense that I am using it is more like remaining in awareness, more like looking at mind, being aware of our internal condition and what is obscuring our View. Mindfulness is more like being aware of what we are doing and our surroundings. It’s very superficial by comparison.

In the Dzogchen sense, Instant Presence means that we are liberating all appearances in each instant by our own realization of the Nature of Mind. When we first step onto the Spiritual Path, this is the same, even though we haven’t yet achieved any sort of realization, other than the realization that Awakening is supremely important. If you are a beginner, you look at that initial spark of your Aspiration to Awaken, you look within, you remain present in that Aspiration. This helps you to increase your capacity.

On the first step of the Spiritual Path, you do not need to believe that life is like a dream, you only need to be aware of your own Aspiration to Awaken. If you can do this, then you can remain on the Spiritual Path. If you are careless with your Aspiration to Awaken by not remaining present in that, then you will simply go back to where you were—and that place where you were is an eternal mess of tremendous suffering that has never helped you in the least!

Remaining present means that you are generating Bodhicitta. It means that you are remaining in awareness of that which cannot be fully understood until you achieve full enlightenment; and, when that happens, you won’t be able to explain it to anyone in a way that can be understood. When Buddha Shakyamuni achieved enlightenment, he almost walked away into obscurity, simply because he knew at once that there was no way to explain what enlightenment truly means. Since it is not conceptual, since it is beyond what we can imagine, there’s very little point in trying to explain it to anyone. Enlightenment is something you must discover by remaining present, by examining your own mind, by investigating all that appears.

Presence is at the essence of our Enlightenment Mind, this spark that I have mentioned repeatedly, this most precious thing that we can ever possess, which is our Aspiration to Awaken, sometimes called Bodhicitta. When we are present, we are present in Bodhicitta, which is much more important than mere compassion. It is this precious jewel that we hold in our heart center. When we have Bodhicitta, even if it is just the fragile understanding of what that is that we discover on the first step, we have something that will unlock all doors. Remaining present in Bodhicitta means that we begin to develop true compassion, not just something superficial that can easily become destroyed by seemingly external factors or various difficulties in life.

Presence keeps our Aspiration to Awaken safe. It keeps us on the Spiritual Path. It helps us to discover this great illusion, without creating additional obstacles, which are demons related to attachments, aversions, and delusional thinking.

We focus on this spark, then watch it grow. This is what presence offers us in our spiritual life. Even the worst tragedy in life cannot wipe away Bodhicitta, if we have sufficiently and genuinely cultivated our Spiritual Path. People who do not hold this Aspiration to Awaken as most precious are easily discouraged from becoming enlightened. Their Spiritual Practice soon falls by the wayside, as if it were a piece of garbage, something sent away, then forgotten. Even people who have spent decades practicing meditation find themselves right back where they began, simply because of a little bit of hardship, simply because they never made the commitment to awaken in the first place, simply because they did not remain present with each step on the Spiritual Path.

I have no doubt that each and every person who genuinely approaches the Spiritual Path with Bodhicitta will awaken. What this looks like is simply remaining present in that aspiration, meditating often, living peacefully with growing compassion. It is simple.

Genuine compassion can only arise when we Awaken. Until then, we can live with and create an artificial form of compassion that is based upon our relative point of view. Even if we strive throughout our lives to generate compassion, it is often rather fragile and prone to us becoming embroiled in the world, forgetting that we have Aspired to Awaken. This is why we need to continue into full Enlightenment, not just create a superficial form of compassion. Awakening means Ultimate Reality, and that means something real that we call Absolute Bodhicitta.

You’ve got this. Aspire to Awaken. Recognize that that spark of compassion is the same as full Enlightenment. Continue with this Aspiration and never give up!
